My New Morning Routine for 2017! #SpecialKGoodness

MorningBlogWork1_650

With the start of a New Year, I have improved how I start my mornings. This year I have been making myself get a full 7-8 hours of sleep each night and I get myself up AT LEAST an hour before the rest of the family does so I can start my day on the right foot.

Are you ready to hear tips on how to streamline your sleep schedule, so you are getting a healthy amount of sleep? I'll also share why an hour of quiet time in the morning before your family wakes up is a perfect way to get a few things done for yourself AND to get your morning started right! And, I'll share tips on why starting the morning with the Special K® Nourish® and Protein Bars and Bites at Target help boost energy and is a quick and easy breakfast option!

Starting a New Morning Routine

1. Shop for Special K® Nourish® and Protein Bars and Bites at Target:
Untitled Untitled
I hate when I miss eating breakfast, just because I was rushed and didn't have time. So, when I am at Target I always pick up some of the new Special K Nourish® and Protein Bars and Bites to have on hand. There is a variety of flavors to pick from and it really gives me that perfect boost I need before I wake the rest of the family!

I came home with the Special K® Protein Bars in Chocolate Cherry Nut and the Special K® Protein Bites in Peanut Butter Chocolate.

You can also save on these products with Target's Cartwheel:
SaveWithCartwheel

2. Go to Bed Earlier AND Get Up Earlier!
Untitled Untitled
One of the new settings on the iPhone is the 'Bedtime' feature. You can set a bedtime and wake time and it'll tell you how many hours of sleep you're getting. I have been going to bed at 10:00 p.m. and getting up at 5:00 a.m. every day (sometimes on the weekend I MAY stay up a little later, but I'll get up later).

You'll see that I also have my alarm set for 5:00 a.m. and I put a special little message and some emoticons that says 'Me Time' with a little coffee cup, etc. Some days I will set the 5:15 a.m. timer, too, if I know I have a little room to sleep in a bit longer. Although, I usually leave this off as it gets me into trouble! Better to KNOW you have to get up at 5:00 a.m.!

If you aren't getting your 7-8 hours of sleep now, then it may be hard to adjust your internal clock. I recommend going to bed 15 minutes earlier a night, but don't try to do it all in one big chunk. It'll never work. When the kids were on Christmas break, my pattern got all messed up and I had to do this to get back on track again.

The iPhone is great in that 15 minutes before your bed time, it'll remind you that it is almost time to go to bed. This is when I'll usually get in bed and read a bit before the lights are out.

We've also been setting our thermostat to a lower temp (68 degrees F), because I've read that a cooler temperature is better for sleep. You also want to avoid eating anything a couple of hours before bed, which has been great as I needed to cut out that unhealthy before bed snack anyway!

3. Start Your Morning with ME Time!
MorningBlogWork1
When my alarm clock goes off first thing in the morning, I like to spend 30-45 minutes waking up by catching up on my blog or by doing a devotional. If I don't have time for my devotional in the morning, I try to do it while I'm waiting to pick my kids up later from school or before bed. During this time I will also boost myself with one of my Special K® Protein Bars while I am working on my laptop.

3. Get that Work Out DONE in the Morning!

MorningWorkout1
After I'm more awake and have something in my belly, I will do my morning run. However, I don't run every morning... some mornings I do a workout DVD at home instead.

MorningWorkout2
On the mornings I do my workout DVD, I find that the Special K® Protein Bites are perfect to eat while I'm starting up the DVD (why won't they let us skip through the introduction on DVD's?!) or while stretching.

So, why workout in the morning? I feel my workouts are always the most productive if I just get them out of the way. It is SUCH a boost to know I'm done and I don't need to think about it the rest of the day! And, if you get it done first thing, you don't have to worry about being too tired later or sometimes it just never happens, because something else comes up!

I try to run three days a week and sometimes my runs last an hour, so I will schedule less ME time for myself on those days. On the days I do my workout DVD's, I stick to 30 minute workouts so that I have more ME time before the workout. You really need to figure out how early you want to get up and how much time you want to devote to working out. If 30 minutes is all you can do, do that! If you can only squeeze in 15 minutes, but can also do 15 minutes later in the day... that will be sufficient.

4. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help!!
Asking for help is something I've always been afraid to do. My husband has always been wonderful about helping with bedtime tasks, but I wasn't getting any help in the morning. This year, I decided I was going to give up my perfectionist ways and ask him for help! I asked him if he could make our bed (who cares if it isn't made perfectly, it's made!), wake the kids and get them up and dressed. Both kids get themselves dressed, but they sometimes need to be reminded 2-3 times to get up. I figured, if he could do these things for me before he got in the shower it would save me at least 15 minutes. And, seriously... do you know what I can do in 15 minutes?! A lot! Then, I make the kids beds, help them with breakfast and get my daughters lunch made.

5. Shower, Get Ready and Get Kids Up. Then, get out the door!
I can shower and get myself ready in about 30-45 minutes, depending on what I'm doing with my hair and if I'm wearing makeup. You may need to adjust this to your own time, depending on how long it takes you to get yourself ready.

This is what is working for ME right now and it's been great! The hardest part is training your body to adjust to this new schedule. But, you'll be glad once you do! The saying... the early bird always gets the worm is SO true!

ChocolateCherryNut1
I wanted to talk a little more about the Special K® Protein Bars. The protein bars include 8 grams of protein and familiar favorite flavors. This Chocolate Cherry Nut satisfies by chocolate cravings yet it has delicious chunks of cherry and crunchy nuts in it with NO artificial flavors.

ChocolateCherryNut3
Here is a close up of the bar and you can see it is chocolate on the bottom with big chunks of nuts, chocolate and cherries on top. It is SO good!

ProteinBites1
The Special K® Protein Bites are convenient, poppable snack bites that are great for on-the-go. These bites don't have any artificial flavors.

ProteinBites2
The protein bites pictured above are Peanut Butter Chocolate and you can definitely see the chunks of chocolate in them!

What routine works for you in the morning? If you are looking for an easy breakfast that will energize you every morning, be sure to check out Special K® Nourish® and Protein Bars and Bites at Target!

The Creative Corner Link Up Party & Weekly Recap - 01/22/17

Welcome back to our DIY/Craft Link Up Party! Thank you for stopping by every week!

I like to share a little recap of my week at the start of each party:

Last weekend we had a massive ice storm... that wasn't so massive. The kids got off of school on Friday and we did get a lot of ice, but then it was cloudy on Saturday and the temperature stayed just barely above freezing on Sunday and we didn't get the 3 days of freezing rain that was predicted. I was excited, because I had made reservations at The Tavern for Brian's birthday and we didn't have to cancel them. I got the Surf & Turf sampler for my meal and it was SO tasty! On Thursday, Nathan had his last Pinewood Derby and he went with a Star Trek theme for his car.

Untitled Untitled
My main focus of the week was decorating our new IKEA shelves. Oh my goodness, those shelves can hold a lot! These two photos are sneak peaks, but I plan to do the FULL reveal of how I decorated them on January 31st! I can't wait! CommercialSilk sponsored some lovely grass pots for me to add to the shelves and you'll hear more about that in my future post! Brian was out of town for work for a few days this week and it kept me mighty busy with the kids and of course they had a lot of activities in the evening after school. Brian always brings us back gifts when he travels and I hope you tuned into my Instagram Stories to see what he brought back for us!

I usually have SO many photos to go through before I can decide which ones to edit when I shoot the photos for Thursday Fashions Files... however, I shot these last weekend during a break in-between the ice storm we had! Eek! It was freezing and I could hear water dripping the entire time from the ice melting on the trees (it almost sounded like it was raining!). So, my photographer (the hubs) and I did these photos in record time, because I was FUH-reezin'!!!

For this outfit, I decided to style my lovely olive dress again for y'all and this time I paired it with a warm fur vest, black tights and my comfortable TOMS wedges. I actually wore this out on a date with the hubs for his birthday dinner.

I wasn't sure about the black tights, BUT the fur vest has some black hairs (that sounds weird) in it and they really looked great together (IMHO).

Beyond Thrilled to see SO many #ShowYourMug Photos!

Recently I worked with Community Coffee on a Giveaway, where you would have a chance to win a year's worth of free coffee in exchange for showing your mug and tagging me and Community Coffee on Instagram.

I was really surprised by how many of you shared your mugs! Below you'll see some of you that played along:

Again, thanks ladies for sharing your lovely mugs! I was so excited every time one of you tagged me and I got to read about your favorite mug!

Running Goal
Untitled
I started training for my 10th (that's crazy!) half marathon yesterday! I haven't really set any specific goals for myself with half marathons, except to try to PR. However, I haven't PR'ed my 2:06 time in a couple years! After training for a marathon at a specific pace and finishing a little above that pace, I've decided I am going to do the same for the half marathon. Usually I try to run fast at the beginning and then I run out of steam at the end. This time I am going to run a fairly even pace of 8:55-9:10, so that I can comfortably meet my sub 2:00 PR. So far I've been trying to run my long run of the week at this pace, which has only been 6 miles so far and then for my other runs, I'll run that pace for 1/3 of each mile. It has been working out great so far!

I can honestly say that when I looked at my half marathon training plan, it looked SO easy compared to the marathon training I did just last season. I think this marathon has prepared me mentally to tackle this sub 2:00 goal for this spring!! My plan is to try to sub 2:00 at my spring half, or at least PR from 2:06. Then, if I don't meet that PR I am going to try again at the Rock 'n Roll race this fall. I always seem to do better at fall races, so I figure I am going to really try my hardest at these two races and HOPEFULLY (fingers crossed) I can finally achieve this goal.

Fruit-Full Kids
Untitled
Recently I received this adorable plate from Fruit-Full Kids, which I have been using for meals with my kids. These plates are wonderful, because they include a Bible verse and start Christian conversation while we eat! The images on the plates are colorful and fun, too! The plates are BPA-free, dishwasher safe and non-breakable! You can visit their website to see all 16 of their adorable designs, which include birthday, Thanksgiving and even Christmas designs! Mondo Beyondo Again!
unseen
There is an online 'dreaming' class that I have taken several times called Mondo Beyondo. The photo above is taken from the class. It seems lately I have taken Mondo Beyondo about every other year (2013, 2015 and now in 2017) and I've taken it even before those years. My favorite part of the class is creating my 'Mondo Beyondo List', which is a list of dreams that may be completely unrealistic or perhaps even something that surprises you. I've enjoyed writing down my Mondo Beyondo lists each time I've done this online class and I also enjoy looking back at them and crossing off dreams that I've fulfilled. The class is five weeks and you get a prompt each morning Monday-Friday. I've really been enjoying it!

Reading
22504623
This month I finished The Fringe Hours by Jessica N. Turner.

This book is about turning 'fringe' hours into useful and productive time for YOURSELF. A 'fringe hour' is a little slot of time you find throughout the day that would otherwise be wasted. Such as time spent waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting for your doctor to see you, 15 minutes before you need to pick your kids up from school, etc. There were a lot of suggestions hinted in this book that I already do, such as getting up early in the morning before the rest of the family is awake to gain some ME time.

I did like the chapter where it says you really shouldn't be afraid to ask for help. Something I have always struggled with is asking for help... part of this is because I am a little selfish and think that only I can make the bed without X amount of wrinkles or run a load of laundry without accidentally putting X garment in the dryer without shrinking it. The list goes on... I'm a perfectionist and only *I* can do it right. Have you ever said that to yourself? BUT, I also feel as the 'woman' in the household, I should be doing these things and if I ask for help I am just being a nag. I recently watched a video of a mom where she was making fun of life and she said she asked her husband to do something around the house and then asked him again (after it wasn't done) 6 months later and she felt like a 'nag'. Ok, this is an EXTEME example, but still... I shouldn't feel like asking for help is making me a nagging wife. Also, just to add a note here that my husband isn't afraid to help out AND does if I ask... so, I'm not in any means putting him down. I'm just saying that I shouldn't just assume he will help me with something I need help with, I shouldn't be afraid to ask for help. If I need help darnit, I need to just ask for it. :) Ok, I hope this wasn't a ramble and it made sense. :)

I also liked where she talked about taking care of yourself and stepping up to get that 7-8 hours of sleep. She said that getting enough sleep daily is important and that she even makes it a priority over exercise, cleaning and me time. Wow! She also sets the thermostat to 68 degrees, which I found interesting. I never knew that a cooler house helps your body sleep better, but after researching it online, it seems it is true!

I've really written a lot about this book! Ok, I think I'm done... :) I only gave the book 4 stars, because some of it I've been doing for years... but, I did take away some good ideas from it!

I like to share a little recap of my week at the start of each party:
Untitled Untitled
This week was pretty busy, but somehow I failed to take a lot of photos. Oops! On Monday, Nathan had his D.A.R.E. graduation and he won 1st place on the essay contest. His D.A.R.E. officer even sent his essay to the governor, which was special. Nathan got to read his essay at the graduation and he also got a medal and a cute stuffed animal of the D.A.R.E. mascot! How fun! I was at Hobby Lobby picking up items for a special project that Autumn had at school and I've been eyeing this light up sign for awhile. I found out that I could use the 40% off coupon on it and I was able to purchase it for $23! Does anyone have a lightbox? I am excited to try it out and it may be going on our new IKEA shelves!

This week was also Brian's birthday and we went out to dinner at Olive Garden with the kids and I made him an upside down German chocolate cake. I got a photo of the cake on IG Stories, but not an actual photo. Oops! I guess I need to be better about using my camera AND taking IG stories. If you aren't following me on Instagram or IG Stories yet, you can at @curlycraftymom

The only other exciting thing that happened this week is that the kiddos got an 'ice' day on Friday. We are getting ice ALL weekend, however Saturday turned out to be just cloudy. We had blueberry muffins and worked on Valentine Cards on their 'ice' day home from school. Fun times! :)
